Living in Hawks Ridge, Edmonton
Nature-Focused Living Beside Big Lake
Hawks Ridge is a newer community in Edmonton's Big Lake area, in the far northwest. It sits between Winterburn Road (215 Street) and 231 Street, just south of Big Lake and west of Anthony Henday Drive.
Nature is the point here. The community was planned around natural areas, with trails, ponds and preserved green space woven through it, and it sits next to Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park on Big Lake.

Schools, Parks, Shopping and Commute
Schools. Check the Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools locators for the designated schools for the address you're considering.
Parks and trails. Trails, ponds and preserved natural areas run through the community, and Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park is right next door. It's a well-known spot for birdwatching on Big Lake.
Shopping. For groceries and errands, plan on a short drive, with St. Albert and northwest Edmonton options nearby.
Commute. Winterburn Road connects south to Yellowhead Trail and Anthony Henday Drive. Drive times downtown vary a lot with traffic, so test your commute at rush hour. Check ETS trip planning for current transit routes.
Is Hawks Ridge a Good Fit for You?
Hawks Ridge tends to work well if you want:
- Nature, trails and wildlife as part of daily life
- A newer home in a community with a consistent look
- Easy access to St. Albert as well as Edmonton
- A quieter location on the city's edge
It may not be the right fit if you want shops and services within walking distance or a short commute downtown.
What I'd Watch Out For
- Distance from daily amenities. Groceries, schools and services are mostly a drive away.
- Heavier traffic on Winterburn Road. The road passes industrial areas on the way south, so expect some trucks on your commute.
- Natural-area lots. Homes backing onto preserved land are the most sought after. Ask about drainage and any restrictions on fencing or landscaping.
- Bugs and wildlife. Living beside a lake and natural areas means more mosquitoes in summer and wildlife nearby. Most people here see that as part of the appeal, but it's worth knowing.
- Ongoing building. Remaining phases can bring construction traffic and noise.
