Living in Wedgewood Heights, Edmonton
Established Ravine Living in West Edmonton
Wedgewood Heights is a small, established community in west Edmonton, set between Anthony Henday Drive, Lessard Road and the Wedgewood Ravine, with the North Saskatchewan River valley to the southeast.
It's almost entirely single-family homes. Many streets are named after well-known Edmontonians. If you want a quiet, settled street with ravine trails nearby, it's worth a close look.
Homes and Prices in Wedgewood Heights
Most homes were built in the late 1980s and through the 1990s, and almost all are detached single-family homes.
Ravine-backing homes sit at the top of the range, while interior-lot homes that need updating are the best value. For current prices, see my monthly Edmonton market update or browse the live listings below.
Schools, Parks, Shopping and Commute
Schools. Michael A. Kostek School, a K–6 public school, is nearby in Jamieson Place, just across Lessard Road. School designations can change, so check the Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools locators for the designated schools for the address you're considering.
Parks and trails. The Wedgewood Ravine and river valley trails are on the community's edge.
Shopping. The Lessard and Callingwood area has groceries and everyday shops a few minutes away, and West Edmonton Mall is a short drive.
Commute. Anthony Henday Drive and Whitemud Drive are both close. Drive times downtown vary a lot with traffic, so test your commute at rush hour. Check ETS trip planning for current transit routes.
Is Wedgewood Heights a Good Fit for You?
Wedgewood Heights tends to work well if you want:
- A settled street in an established community
- A detached single-family home
- Ravine and river valley trails nearby
- An elementary school a short distance away
It may not be the right fit if you want a brand-new home, a low-maintenance townhome or an entry-level price point.
What I'd Watch Out For
- Age of the major systems. Many homes are 25 to 40 years old. Ask about the age of the roof, furnace, hot water tank and windows, and budget for them.
- Plumbing from the era. Polybutylene (Poly-B) water lines fell out of use in Edmonton from the mid-1980s, so they're less likely here, but the oldest homes in the area may still have them. Ask the seller and have your inspector check.
- Dated interiors. Original kitchens and bathrooms are common. Price the updates you'd want before you make an offer.
- Ravine lots. Look at grading, drainage, retaining walls and any restrictions near the ravine edge.
- Henday noise. Homes on the west edge closest to Anthony Henday Drive can hear more traffic.
